How to begin breastfeeding

Feeds can take anything from 10 to 40 minutes, so find a comfortable, calm place to breastfeed. The more relaxed you are, the better it will be for your baby. Choose a chair with arms, which supports your back (you may need a cushion). Keep a glass of water nearby, since breastfeeding can make you feel thirsty. Your feet should reach the floor so that your knees and lap are level. Bring your baby to your breast, rather than leaning over.
Technique :
It is important that your baby opens her mouth wide and takes the nipple and a good proportion of the areola surrounding it into her mouth in order to stimulate your breast to produce milk. If your baby sucks just on your nipple, she will get frustrated as she won’t be able to get enough milk, and you may get sore, cracked nipples. I f it feels very uncomfortable, gently insert your little finger in your baby’s mouth between your breast and the corner of her mouth and start again.
